Job Description
Statement Of Duties
Position is responsible for the operation of field optical measuring devices (Total Station: electronic laser distance measuring device (EDM), theodolite, and auto-level) and the electronic field data collection system for the purpose of gathering both topographical and boundary information of municipal lands, rights of ways, easements, and related information. Researches and processes property line boundary information and raw field information into computer generated profiles and topographical plans that are then ready for design.
Supervision
Employee works under the general supervision of the Chief of Survey. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. Any questionable cases are referred to the supervisor for clarification or interpretation. Reviews and checks of the employee’s work are applied to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress, and to insure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.
Job Environment
Numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions govern the work and in some cases, may require additional interpretation. Employee uses judgment to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline to use in a given situation. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.
Errors in calculations can result in incorrect information being used in engineering plans, a delay or loss of service, and/or monetary loss.
The position has occasional contact with residents, contractors, architects, real estate agents and brokers, attorneys, and others regarding engineering office activities, land records, files, plans, street and sewer acceptance contracts, design and projects; and to interpret location of water and sewer and drains. Contacts usually occur in person or on the phone.

Essential Functions
Operates field optical (laser) measuring devices, transit, auto-level, and computerized data recording system to survey, layout, measure, and record construction projects, site plans, rights-of-ways, highways, easements, roadways and utilities.
Using the AutoCAD computer drafting program, processes raw field information into computer generated property line plans, profiles (for roadway and underground utility location and design) and topographical plans (location surveys for parklands and roadways).
Finds and sets monuments for City property boundaries.
Balances and adjusts discovered survey points by comparing field information to that of existing deeds, plans of record, and other records.
Sets out geographic survey control points upon which municipal land boundaries are based.
Sets construction location and design grades for City projects (roadways and utilities).
Performs calculations and measurements in order to prepare cost estimates for municipal projects.
Develops project contacts by checking quantities and estimating construction costs necessary for various projects.
Maintains map files and records with new or changed data.
Prepares and/or maintains records of work performed or other data reports as required.
Water/Sewer tie updates
Maintains established quality and quantity standards; detects and reports improper operation(s), faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to the supervisor; ensures work area(s) and equipment are maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe operating condition, that prescribed safety measures are followed, that established City and Department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations are adhered to.
Assists customers at the engineering office counter and answers the telephones as required, responds to questions and inquiries from the public, contractors, architects, real estate agents and brokers, attorneys and others regarding engineering office activities, land records, files, plans, street and sewer acceptance contracts, designs and projects; interprets locations of water and sewer and drain locations.
If hired after January 1, 2000 assists the snow fighting operation as a “snow chaser” or as directed by the Commissioner of Public Works or his/her designee per the Department of Public Works Organizational Charts.
